“We Think it is Autism, ADHD or Dyslexia (or some other acronym) …Now What?” Help Me to Help My Child!

It was fifteen years ago that our journey through the murky waters of Learning Differences (LD) began, but I can remember it clearly and painfully.

My journey began with that mommy intuition of I think something is wrong and progressed over a couple of years to I know something is wrong.

The next stop on the journey was why doesn’t anyone believe me, am I just imagining this?

We then arrived at what I thought was the last stop… “Your child, most likely, has Specific Learning Disability (SLD). But, he also has memory issues, sequencing issues, etc.…. “. I thought Ok, yay, we have a diagnosis.

“Now what?”, I asked. “We have an after-school reading program we recommend” was the answer. A few months later I asked, “The reading program is not helping…. now what?”

“Now what” became my mantra.

I realized that I had to figure it out. So, I did.

What I would now like to share with you are the foundations and tools to empower YOU with the answer to your own question of, “Now What?”

Here is what I now know as a pediatrician, a Licensed Davis Facilitator/Coach, and a mom:

– there are THREE keys you need so you can help your child –

These three keys will help you to unlock the genius that is at the core of your child, and allow you to always find the answer to ‘now what?’

Whether your kiddo has been formally diagnosed or just shows many of the characteristics of Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, Sensory Integration Disorder, Processing Disorders and/or (some other acronym or learning difference) … the three keys are the same.

Key # 1. UNDERSTAND/KNOWLEDGE – Empower yourself with the reasoning and logic that explains the characteristics/symptoms your child is experiencing. Knowledge is power. When you understand the reasoning and logic, you can determine what next step fits you and your family the best. It also allows you to assess different programs and modalities from a more informed perspective.

Key # 2. SUPPORT – What does your child need from you? They need your support and understanding. They need you on their side.

Key # 3. PLAN OF ACTION – This is the what brings about lasting change. If you are thinking ‘he’ll grow out of it’, ‘they will be fine, they just need to try harder’, ‘it is the school’s responsibility’, or ‘she’ll be alright, look how I turned out’, then you risk leaving your child in a place of suffering. However, I also understand that as parents, we need help with the “Now What?”

With that…Now What?

Simple. Your next step is to start looking for the keys. You can start on your own or you can let me walk you through the process. It is like a recipe, and the information I just shared with you are the ingredients. You could just start throwing it all in a bowl and hope it turns out right. Or, you could read the recipe. Or, you could read the recipe and learn as you watch a chef explain how to make it on TV.

To help you find the keys, we created an ongoing series entitled:
